in Parliamentary Election Results

Most of you should know by now the results of the Cyprus Parliamentary elections. I will list them here as well:

ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΚΟΣ ΣΥΝΑΓΕΡΜΟΣ (ΔΗ.ΣΥ) (right wing): 34,28%

ΕΥΡΩΠΑΪΚΟ ΚΟΜΜΑ (ΕΥΡΩ.ΚΟ) (used to belong to ΔΗ.ΣΥ): 3,88%

The rest of the votes went to smaller parties/independent representatives.

The most interesting part of these elections, though, is the number of voters that did not practice their right to vote. This number totals to 113.216 (21,30%); a rather sizable percentage. This is a clear sign that voters started to lose faith in Cyprus’ political system and the involved politicians.

Of course, all of the politicians, elected or not, have been talking in the media about this high percentage; everybody promising to study this phenomenon and fix it (something I doubt) and many of them taking the blame on themselves.

The only positive aspect I see in these elections is the entrance of some young representatives in the Parliament and the withdrawal of some old ones. There needs to be “recycling” every now and then and adding some new minds to the body of the Parliament could stir new movements and a much needed push, in order to see some really needed changes in many aspects of life in Cyprus.

Let’s see. I am still optimistic.
